B12 is an essential vitamin that can only be found in animal products and small amounts in fortified vegan milks, yogurts, cheeses and some cereals. Vitamin B12 is found in the soils and the environment around us, although due to the use of artificial fertilisers and pesticides the soils have become depleted of the bacteria that produce this vitamin.

Therefore, it must be supplemented daily in the vegan diet. We need a minimum of 1.5 micrograms (μg) per day to prevent deficiency which a 1000-1200μg covers nicely. B12 is water soluble and very safe so the body eliminates what it doesn't use.

The body needs B12 for DNA synthesis and metabolism. It's involved in every cell in our body and is also a fundamental part of our central nervous system which allows our brain to communicate a response in our body.

Symptoms of B12 deficiency may arise over a few years due to B12 store depletion in our bodies. Symptoms can be along the lines of numbness or anaemia, although you may not experience symptoms. To make sure stores are high it is safest to take a daily supplement.  In fact even non-vegans can become deficient. Intrinsic factor is a component in the digestive tract that the B12 needs to allow it to be absorbed so supporting our gut health which nutritious foods helps improve this.
